Can all products great and small be used in a product video?
We’re strong believers that any product can be successfully filmed. At Humanoid, when MCR – an innovator in work gloves, safety equipment and PPE – approached us to highlight the features and benefits of their new premium work glove we knew that a high-quality, impactful product video was possible.
A brief moment in time for a product video with pace
Our first step is to talk to our clients, MCR in this case, and understand their brief. We want to understand everything they know about their audience or whether we’re targeting a new market. And what they hope to achieve from the video. Is it about awareness? Or aiding conversion? Or focused on features and benefits?
We then take time to look at the brief alongside practicalities. What space do we have to film in? How is the product used? Do we need to use PPE alongside the product to film? Do we need to audition actors?
It also when we review the product, the premium work glove. We asked MCR to show us how it was used and could see that it would easily get lost in a busier and wider scene.
Agile action to create product focus
We knew that by eliminating background distractions we could sharpen the focus on the product. By taking an agile approach through handheld filming, we were able to maintain a small production footprint that benefitted the product video.
This footprint enabled us to film all content with a handheld camera and a wide-angle lens. The lens choice was important to magnify the focus on the premium gloves and keep them centre-screen.

An insta-fail free post-production
Our choice of equipment and team meant we could get in close on the action during the live filming. Another option could have been to zoom in during the post-production. But, to paraphrase the great photographer Robert Capa: if you want to make better videos, get closer.
By thinking strategically and with agility we were able to get as close as possible. And communicate the flexibility, tactility and durability of the product with epic hero shots. These were enhanced expertly in post-production with a spot colour effect to focus attention away from the environment and to how the product is used.
Taking it to the trade
The videos are forming part of MCR’s point of sale marketing across Toolstation and other retailers. It is too early to identify results but we impressed MCR with our approach and end result, leading to us developing additional product videos.
Our final piece of advice would be to never write off the power of video. Any product has the potential to feature in a product video. Taking the time to understand the brief and the product alongside logistical considerations is crucial to success. We always put the same attention to detail into our pre-production planning as we do on-set when filming.
